About the event
Organizer: Ungdom i Oppdrag, Nasjonalt bønneråd, Proklamedia, Filadelfia Stadt, Venner av Selja Klostergård, Voss Bønnehus
This year's theme is "Norway will be mine again". On Saturday, July 4, we are responsible for 24 hours of continuous prayer from Selja, as part of "All of Norway prays". "All of Norway prays" is an initiative to see prayer for Norway take place uninterrupted for an entire year, day and night. For more information, see: https://utsendt.no/helerogalandber/.
Our invitation to you is therefore:
"Join us in praying from the place where some of the first prayers in Norway were said."
On this day, there will be a joint gathering in the monastery ruins at Selja, in addition to continuous prayer throughout the day from the cave there, divided into different teams. There will be boat transfers back and forth from the island to the different prayer times, and there will also be the opportunity to sign up for different times that you want to participate in the prayer day.
Selja stands as a strong symbol of the first Celtic Christians who came to our country. Some of the first prayers for Norway were said here, and one of the country's first monasteries was also built here. The island is perhaps Norway's first pilgrimage destination, and for over 1000 years people have traveled here to seek God in prayer.
It is important to us that "Hele norge ber" also includes prayers from Selja, the place where so much began. Here we can unite our prayers with the prayers that have risen from this place through generations. We want to pray with faith and expectation that what God has begun will be completed in our time - that Norway will once again turn to God and live out its calling.
Tradition tells us that the Irish princess Sunniva came to Selja at the end of the 900s with her entourage. She fled an arranged marriage and set out to sea, trusting that the Holy Spirit would guide them. Some of the party came to Kinn, while others came to Selja. Here they lived until they were pursued by Håkon Ladejarl's men. They sought refuge in a cave on the island and prayed for God's protection.
According to the story, stones fell down and closed the cave, and they died there. Later, there were reports of a plague on the island, and in the year 996, Olav Tryggvason is said to have built a church in memory of Sunniva and her party. The church father Tertullian expressed himself thus: "The blood of the martyrs is the seed of the church." Therefore, some say that it is in the cave on Selja that the church in Norway was born.
How much of the Sunniva story can be confirmed historically is uncertain. Nevertheless, it stands as a strong symbol of our Christian heritage. Sunniva is considered Norway's first saint - young, brave and wholehearted, with a wholehearted surrender. Her life continues to be an inspiration.
From Selja, we also want to pray for the emerging youth revival we see today – that a new generation will rise up with the same dedication and boldness, and bring change to our nation.
There are a limited number of places, so we encourage early registration.
The meetings will be held at Filadelfia Stadt, on the island of Selja and in Selje Church. More information will be provided upon registration.
If you are coming without a car and need a ride, please let us know.
You are welcome to join us!
