Lost in Translation (2003)

Lost in Translation (2003)

Had your fill of Christmas dinners and family gatherings? Get out of the house between Christmas and New Year and come with us to Tokyo!

Bob Harris is a fading American film star who has come to Japan to shoot a well-paid whisky commercial. Charlotte is a recent graduate, newly married and tagging along on her husband's work trip, but he barely has time for her. Both are sleepless, adrift and a little too far from home. In the bar of the same luxury hotel they find each other, and what follows is a few days of karaoke, late-night adventures in a neon-lit city and a friendship that's hard to put a name to.

Sofia Coppola won the Oscar for Best Original Screenplay, and Bill Murray has rarely been better, both funny and quietly heartbreaking. With a dreamy soundtrack and one of film history's most talked-about whispers, Lost in Translation is a film about loneliness and connection, about feeling like a stranger and still being seen. Perhaps not a typical Christmas film, but one about what matters most in the darkest time of year: finding someone to share it with.

Perhaps not a typical Christmas film, but perfect for the days between Christmas and New Year, when time seems to stand still and there's room to reflect. Just like Bob and Charlotte, caught between two lives in a city that never sleeps.
