German-Norwegian Maritime Seminar
Tuesday 2 June
11:30 – 18:30
Conference Room "Elbe", HK Hamburg
Adolphsplatz 1, 20457 Hamburg, Tyskland
About the event
Organizer: German-Norwegian Chamber of Commerce, in cooperation with HK Hamburg
The maritime industry is under growing pressure to decarbonize, but the pathway forward is complex. While alternative fuels such as hydrogen, ammonia, and methanol offer long-term solutions, they remain costly and depend on infrastructure still under development. At the same time, measures such as retrofitting vessels, improving energy efficiency, and optimizing operations, might deliver faster and more cost-effective emissions reductions in the short term.
This creates a dual challenge: balancing immediate, practical actions with longer-term transformation, while ensuring the transition remains economically viable. Key questions remain around financing. Can green shipping become a sustainable business case, or will it continue to rely on policy-driven incentives?
At the same time, the green transition is reshaping the sector’s risk landscape. New fuels, technologies, and increasingly digitalized operations introduce new dependencies and vulnerabilities, from emerging supply chains to cyber risks and geopolitical uncertainty. As a result, sustainability and security are becoming closely intertwined.
This session brings together German and Norwegian stakeholders in the maritime industry to explore competitiveness and resilience in the context of maritime decarbonization.
